In Haivision’s latest Broadcast Transformation Report for 2024, the broadcast industry’s top priorities have been revealed. This year, artificial intelligence has made its debut on the list of key technologies that professionals are focusing on.
In a survey of over 800 broadcast and media experts conducted between October and December 2023, the respondents identified several critical technological priorities for 2024. Enabling remote production and transitioning to IP tied for the top spot at 44 percent each, followed closely by moving to the cloud at 38 percent. Supporting 4K and HDR content came in at 35 percent, while leveraging 5G technology and implementing AI were selected by 25 and 24 percent of respondents, respectively.
The survey also looked into the streaming codecs currently being used by broadcasters. H.264 was the most common choice at 79 percent, with HEVC following at 67 percent for live video contribution. Notably, there has been a consistent increase in the adoption of the HEVC codec over the past four surveys, while the use of H.264 is gradually declining.
Although more than half of broadcast professionals have embraced IP and cloud-based infrastructure, a significant number of them (86 percent) still rely on SDI. The adoption of cloud-based workflows has seen an uptick this year, rising from 35 percent in 2023 to 44 percent. When it comes to IP technologies, NDI and SMPTE ST 2110 are the popular choices among respondents.
Marcus Schioler, Vice President of Marketing at Haivision, highlighted the evolving trends captured in this year’s report. He emphasized the established use of SRT and internet for live video transport, alongside the increasing popularity of HEVC and the gradual shift towards cloud and cellular network utilization. New trends such as the adoption of 5G private networks and AI technologies are also emerging within the broadcast industry.
