With advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, the prospect of using it in judicial decision-making processes has been given increased focus in recent times. The use of AI technology in legal proceedings is bound to reduce the burden of courts, decrease the pendency ratio, and improve overall efficiency of the judicial system.
In this regard, the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) and the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) have taken steps to prepare a legal framework to incorporate AI technology in judicial proceedings. Such steps are likely to be taken in order to revolutionize the criminal justice system in the country. While it is still a developing concept, there is prospect that AI could be used to interpret data and facts more effectively, thereby making its way into courtroom decisions.

Adoption of AI technology would reduce pendency of cases in courts, and improve decision making by quickly and accurately analyzing the nature of a disputed legal matter. AI technology can streamline and speed up the entire court process, allowing courts to prioritize and handle more complex cases. Moreover, an AI-driven decision process could noticeably reduce the burden on the Pakistani judiciary. The incorporation of AI technology would, therefore, grant more trust in peak judicial proceedings in the country.
However, like any other system AI also faces certain challenges. These also include concerns that AI and its models may open up new opportunities for bias and discrimination, in addition to debate regarding accountability and transparency. Nevertheless, further research and development could potentially lead to significant advancements in the field of AI in legal proceedings.
