AI Camera Project in Panaji Generates Rs 3 Crore in E-Challans

Date:

The Goa government has successfully raked in over Rs 3 crore in e-challans after a year-long implementation of an AI camera project at Merces Circle in Panaji. The project, which aimed to improve traffic management and safety, targeted two main violations: overspeeding and red light jumping.

Since the project began in June 2023, the Directorate of Transport has collected a substantial amount, with Rs 2.7 crore accumulated by May 31, 2024. Despite several pending challans, the total amount is expected to exceed Rs 3 crore in the near future.

The data revealed a significant decrease in overspeeding violations over the monitoring period, from 5,265 in June 2023 to 1,891 in May 2024. On the other hand, violations for jumping signals fluctuated throughout the year, with the highest recorded in July 2023 and a sudden drop in April 2024 followed by an increase in May.

Although the project faced challenges in February and March 2024 with a technical glitch, efforts were made to rectify the issue. The Director of Transport, Pravimal Abhishek, emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and evaluation for system effectiveness and sustainability.

Looking ahead, there are currently no plans to include additional violations in the project’s scope. The authorities are committed to refining the system to ensure its long-term success. With technology playing a crucial role in enforcement, the government intends to leverage more tech solutions in the future for better and impartial impact on traffic management and safety.
