AI and ChatGPT Impacting Cybersecurity in Astonishingly Positive and Threatening Ways

Date:

ChatGPT and generative artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing the field of cybersecurity, with both beneficial and daunting implications. Cybercriminals are becoming capable of carrying out impressively sophisticated attacks on a broad scale by leveraging AI. Defenders are also responding, utilizing the same technology to protect critical infrastructures, governmental organizations, and organizational networks. Christopher Ahlberg, CEO of threat intelligence platform Recorded Future, elaborated on the dangers and opportunities presented by this advancement.

AI has helped malicious actors devise more efficient methods of attack, with AI automation allowing them to carry out complex attacks much faster than with human-powered methods. Cybercriminals have even taken advantage of AI’s ability to generate convincing phishing emails for widespread targeting—more personalized emails create a higher success rate for malicious actors. Unfortunately, according to Ahlberg, cybercriminals can leverage AI capabilities in increasingly devious ways.

Fortunately, defenders are taking measures to protect against attackers and their own AI technology. Companies are now trying to tackle breaches before they happen by automating their alerting and scanning mechanisms. AI-enhanced threat hunting is enabling cyber experts to trace patterns across large volumes of data quickly, leading to more effective defensive strategies. Even so, there are still many risk factors associated with AI—alliances between goverment and technical experts will be essential for managing the increasing complexity of the landscape.

Ahlberg also expressed his concerns about nations such as China and Russia, potentially deploying autonomous AI machines without any ethical considerations. It is uncertain whether it is even possible to detach AI from the global networks, rendering economic and political conflicts inevitable. Solutions must focus on designing products with clear control, lessening the chances of malicious consequences of AI.
