Advocating a 4-Day Working Week: ChatGPT’s Perspective

Date:

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence technology developed by OpenAI that could help bolster the case for a four-day workweek. By providing AI-driven productivity, ChatGPT could help Americans reduce their working hours without sacrificing effectiveness.

A six-month trial that began in February 2022 studied 33 companies and found that their revenues remained largely unchanged and some saw increases when employees were able to work fewer hours without sacrificing productivity. Such success could be replicated with the assistance of technologies such as ChatGPT.

Five experts in AI, economics, and politics told Insider that in the years ahead, AI might be the catalyst for achieving a four-day workweek, boosting global GDP by up to 7% according to a report from Goldman Sachs. The idea has also garnered support from Representative Mark Takano, a Democrat from California, who has pushed for a 32-hour workweek.

AI technology such as ChatGPT is a viable option for the future of work, particularly in terms of reducing our workloads and increasing productivity. ChatGPT enables employees to create first drafts of emails, written documents, code, and design faster and easier, allowing them to spend less time producing the same amount of work. This can give employees the flexibility to work fewer hours while still maintaining economic returns.

On the other hand, some aspects of the culture of the American workforce could be a hindrance to a four-day workweek, as workers may prefer more income to leisure and some businesses may use AI to incentivize longer working hours while reducing the size of their workforces.

Nevertheless, AI technologies like ChatGPT are helping to revolutionize and modernize the workplace, paving the way for more flexible, efficient, and efficient workplaces in the years to come. It could be a key factor in achieving the shorter workweek that many are working towards.
