Artificial intelligence (AI) is undergoing a transformative shift, becoming more human by design and paving the way for unprecedented potential, according to new research from Accenture. The study, titled Human by Design: How AI Unleashes the Next Level of Human Potential, reveals that AI and other disruptive technologies are evolving to be more human-like and intuitive for people to use. This shift towards human-centric technologies is expected to drive greater capabilities, improve productivity, and unleash creativity across industries.
Accenture’s research highlights the growing impact of generative AI, which has the potential to impact 44% of working hours and enable productivity enhancements across 900 different types of jobs. This evolving technology is set to create an estimated $6 to $8 trillion in global economic value. As AI, spatial computing, and body-sensing technologies become more advanced and seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our lives, the technology will become more omni-present yet invisible.
The study identifies four key trends in the move towards human by design technologies:
1. Match Made in AI: This trend reshapes our relationship with knowledge by reorganizing data in ways that facilitate human-like reasoning and creativity. Instead of searching through vast amounts of information, people will receive personalized, curated responses that could range from advice and summaries to art pieces.
2. Meet My Agent: The vision is to create an interconnected ecosystem where AI-empowered agents work on behalf of individuals. These automated agents not only assist and advise but also take decisive actions in both physical and digital worlds. This collaboration will generate immense value for enterprises and increase collective output.
3. The Space We Need: This trend involves creating rich, immersive environments using spatial computing, metaverse, digital twins, and AR/VR technologies. By extending our physical, 2D worlds into 3D environments, we can fuse the digital and physical realms, bringing people together in new ways and driving innovation.
4. Our Bodies Electronic: Using innovative embedded technologies such as AI-powered wearables, brain-sensing neurotech, and eye and movement tracking to better understand human behaviors and intentions. These human interface technologies enhance the way we work and live by providing deeper insights into ourselves.
According to Paul Daugherty, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Accenture, this seismic shift towards human by design technologies will accelerate unprecedented change across industries, from retail and entertainment to medicine and manufacturing. Daugherty emphasizes that organizations that embrace these technologies now will redefine what it means to be an industry leader.
However, as human-centric technologies like generative AI continue to advance, it is crucial to ensure a balanced and responsible approach in their use. Accenture’s research reveals that 93% of executives believe that with rapid technological advancements, organizations must innovate with purpose.
