Fooling a Hacker Using ChatGPT: A Research Study

Recent developments in generative AI have sparked a revolution in enterprise security, changing the face of cybersecurity forever. AI-based deception technologies are gaining traction as a way for security teams to keep up with constantly evolving threats. One security researcher Xavier Bellekens of Lupovis, a deception as a service provider, has put a new spin on this technology; by using ChatGPT to create a decoy honeypot, he managed to trick a hacker into breaching a non-existent system.

Bellekens set up the decoy printer using instructions and code generated by ChatGPT and by hosting it on Vultr, he was able to log incoming connections and collect valuable data. Almost immediately the printer was attracting bots and human attention and in one instance, Bellekens noticed that an individual had successfully logged in. By then cross referencing the IP addresses with another piece of Lupovis software called Prowl, Bellekens was able to investigate further and confirm that he had successfully fooled the hacker.

This exercise has highlighted the power of generative AI tools in the field of deception security, a strategy that involves creating decoy infrastructure to mislead attackers and gain insights into the techniques they use to access the environment. The results were received positively by security researchers and from Gartner senior analyst Henrique Teixeira too; according to him, this exercise is “a significant example that enables citizen developers to be more productive”.

Deception security, or deception technology, works to detect threat actors through the use of fake assets, which keeps them from roaming freely in an organization’s system. AI-driven solutions are making it easier for security teams to implement this strategy and generative AI can be used to generate decoys at scale. By 2025, it is estimated that 25% of cloud applications will leverage deception security features, with automated moving-target defense playing an integral role.

Lupovis provides deception technology to detect and respond to the ever-evolving threats while protecting organizations. The company was founded by CEO Xavier Bellekens who worked together with Evan Goldberg, the CEO of GPT-3 author OpenAI. Bellekens is leading the way in using generative AI to develop new products and creating a more secure enterprise world.
