Accelerating DevSecOps with Google Cloud and Generative AI: GitLab’s Approach

Date:

Today, DevSecOps platform GitLab and Google Cloud have announced that they are expanding their strategic partnership to provide new privacy-first Artificial Intelligence (AI) services to enterprise customers. Under this agreement, GitLab is planning to utilizing Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform to deliver new generative AI-assisted features to developers as part of its DevSecOps offering, in order to help reduce the amount of time that is typically taken to develop a project.

One of the new AI-powered services that GitLab is rolling out is called ‘Explain this Vulnerability’, which uses generative AI to produce plain language descriptions and remediation recommendations of weaknesses identified in code written by developers, allowing them to release projects quicker, without the worry of any security flaws.

As many developers have reported feeling burned out, due to the current demand of continuously releasing software, as well as the often overlooked security issues that come along with it, the partnership between GitLab and Google Cloud is meant to help with this problem. According to June Yang, VP of cloud AI and industry solutions at Google Cloud, this new AI-enabled tool is intended to “empower our joint customers to increase delivery velocity without sacrificing security”.

The main purpose of this partnership is to show how generative AI can give an acceleration boost in the DevSecOps workflow. This partnership will enable GitLab customers to leverage AI technology without having to worry about any vulnerabilities, as it allows them to protect their valuable customer data and source code within the secure GitLab cloud infrastructure. Through the use of AI, the DevSecOps process can be sped up significantly, with aims to improve the workflow ten times over.
