Korean companies are taking extra measures in the wake of the ChatGPT data leak fears, with Samsung, SK, LG, POSCO, and many more corporations taking action to create guidelines on the use of this revolutionary chatbot artificial intelligence service. ChatGPT, a generative AI service by OpenAI, has seen a spike in use since its 3.5 version was released in November 2020, with people turning to it for help in a variety of fields such as programming, translation, and web searches.
As a precaution against any potential data breaches which may occur due to mishandling confidential information, Samsung Electronics recently issued a warning on their internal bulletin board, while managers are being trained on the scope of use of ChatGPT. Similarly, POSCO is allowing their employees to use ChatGPT only through their business communication platform, in order to heighten security as well as work efficiency. LG Display has created an in-company campaign aimed at providing information on protecting the company information, and further preventing any data leakages. SK hynix has blocked the use of ChatGPT in their internal network altogether, and any employees who wish to use this service must first obtain security approval.
Business Administration professor at Sejong University, Kim Dae-jong, expressed the need for private companies to create guidelines regulating the use of ChatGPT and other chatbot AI services, pointing to how other overseas companies have chosen to ban its use. Furthermore, his school is looking towards formulating their own guidelines on using ChatGPT in assignments, to prevent students from taking advantage of it.
Responding to the ChatGPT usage and potential issues, the Ministry of Science and ICT held an education session on Monday and invited electronics engineering expert, Sung Won-yong, to impart information on the workings of ChatGPT. The Ministry is looking to create more opportunities for employees to explore and gain insight into the intricate principles of newer invention such as AI, to aid in the establishment of required policies.
Apart from the corporations mentioned in the article, other South Korean companies are also looking to create their own set of guidelines for ChatGPT, in order to prevent any issues or data leakage that may be caused by the misuse of this service.
