Social networking platform Nextdoor announced the launch of new features powered by generative AI. One of the main features being tested with select users is the introduction of an “Assistant” feature that helps users create more engaging posts. This new feature is trained to recognize how to make posts more community-friendly and is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The Assistant feature can help users rephrase posts that could be potentially harmful or controversial. For example, if two neighbors are debating the installation of speed bumps, AI can suggest ways to rephrase comments to make the same point in a calmer way. The feature also can recommend more personalized content to each user based on the topic and context of their conversations.
Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar confirmed that AI is being used to help users create posts that will drive positive engagement for the community, and emphasized the importance of safety. She indicated that users don’t need to accept AI’s suggestions, giving the flexibility to post whatever they want, as long as it follows the platform’s guidelines.
Nextdoor has set up a dedicated generative AI team, led by Head of AI Qi He, in order to improve use of the technology across their platform with new hires. The feature is being rolled out to users across the United States, although the company is taking precautions to ensure the features are being implemented in a safe and responsible way.
Having gone through a period of criticism in the past due to racial profiling accusations, Nextdoor’s revamp of the app has seen an increased focus on creating a more welcoming neighborhood experience. With the introduction of the Assistant feature and other generative AI models, they hope to do just that and even promote more local news, events, and activities.
