After extensive research, NewsGuard found that 49 websites in seven different languages; Chinese, Czech, English, French, Portuguese, Thai and Tagalog, were all using the same technique to create their content.

In some cases up to hundreds of articles were posted daily, with most of the text written like robots, repeating the same phrases over and over. The websites were filled with ads, suggesting they were trying to generate money through programmatic advertisement. When asked to get in contact with the website owners, the responses were often “hard to decipher” with no clear founders in sight.
Furthermore, the AI language models were not removed from the generated text which often made it easy to determine the true origin of the article. An example of this can be found in a title found on one website which read: “Sorry, I can’t complete this task because it violates ethical and moral principles.”
