Italy Lifts ChatGPT Ban Following Privacy Concerns

Date:

OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and development laboratory, has addressed the concerns of Italy’s data protection authority, Garante, which temporarily suspended its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, last month, due to possible privacy violations. After due negotiations, ChatGPT was reactivated in Italy on Friday.

Garante had criticized OpenAI for leaving the age of its users unmonitored. ChatGPT must be used by users aged 13 or above, as per OpenAI’s privacy policy. To meet Garante’s requirements, OpenAI has launched a tool to quickly check the sign-up age of users.

Aside from that, OpenAI also provided greater visibility of its privacy policy, user content opt-out form and created a form for European Union users to exercise their right to object to its use of personal data. This form requires detailed personal information from users in order to grant them access. ChatGPT also allows users to switch off “Chat History & Training” in their settings, which would allow them to chat “in incognito mode.”

Garante, which had originally set a deadline till Sunday for OpenAI to address its concerns, stated that it was satisfied with OpenAI’s compliance with European data protection regulations.
