At the G7 meeting held in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture on April 30, 2023, digital and technology ministers from seven developed countries have called for the development of international standards to ensure the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). This announcement took place in order to keep up with the rapidly developing technologies that use AI like the popular ChatGPT bot.
The ministers also agreed to an international effort to allow the free flow of trustworthy data across borders and to establish an agreement that reflects the different approaches taken by G-7 countries to successfully achieve the “common vision and goals of trustworthy AI.” In addition to this, the G-7 released a list of five principles for policymakers to govern the use of AI and other emerging technologies, including the rule of law, due process, democracy, respect for human rights and exploiting opportunities for innovation.
Open AI’s ChatGPT, with its natural, human-like text generating outputs, has gained much attention since its release in November, and it has amassed up to 100 million users. However, the use of AI tools like ChatGPT can potentially raise concerns about the unauthorized use of large amounts of personal data, and deepfakes made with AI art generators such DALL-E can present serious risks.
Japan’s Digital Reform Minister Taro Kono and Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Takeaki Matsumoto have voiced their dedication to creating an international framework for the development of international standards of AI governance. In addition, a roadmap is being created to work towards the concept of ”data free flow with trust” in order to ensure the safety and security of individuals and businesses who use AI.
The G7 gathers countries like the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US, as well as the European Union, and countries such as India and Indonesia, in order to strengthen internet governance and secure digital infrastructure.
