Exploring AI to Prevent the Development of Digital Dialects

Date:

Santiago Muñoz Machado, the director of the Royal Spanish Academy and president of the Association of Spanish Language Academies (Asale), will be at the helm of the IX International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE) which took place in Cádiz as a post-pandemic activity.

This event, focused around Spanish language and culture, brings together more than 300 speakers, as well as more than 1,000 registered attendees and multiple activities across the four days. As the president, Muñoz Machado will be presented with a number of topics such as the discussions around the adverb tilde and the risk of the growth of the language from its unity in the framework of diversity.

Moreover, the RAE will present their newly digitalized edition of the Diccionario de la lengua española, a new edition of the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts, and the edition of the Pan-Hispanic Legal Dictionary, which aims to clear out the doubts of Spanish speakers. The Cádiz Congress will also provide an outlook on artificial intelligence related language projects, undertaken not only by the academies, but also by many big technology companies.

Muñoz Machado and the academies are intent on preserving the balance between the unity and diversity of Spanish, detailing the prominence of American accents and vocabulary born from the contact and need to identify elements of nature not found in the Iberian Peninsula.

They are also looking towards the linguistic miscegenation, with papers focusing on all areas, including the relationship with English in the United States and Portuguese in Brazil, as well as their common mixed languages such as Spanglish and Portiñol.
