OpenAI, the US-based artificial intelligence company, announced on Friday that its ChatGPT chatbot service was available again in Italy. This followed their agreement with the Italian data protection agency, the Garante, when it satisfied the requirements set by the watchdog.
The Garante’s mandate for OpenAI to relaunch the chatbot was prompted by suspected violations of user data privacy. OpenAI complied with the 1st of April ultimatum and provided the Garante with information on its algorithm training process, such as how they collect and use data. They also added a tool to verify age upon registration.
The ChatGPT is a machine learning system designed to communicate with users in natural conversation and provide contextual advice, while also utilizing its conversational library. OpenAI has worked with the Garante to meet the necessary guidelines ensuring the protection and safety of the users of the chatbot.
OpenAI was founded by a group of scientists and engineers with the aim of furthering the development of artificial intelligence, with a focus on safety, transparency, and collaboration with the research community. The company’s mission is to “discover and enact the path to safe artificial general intelligence”, which will result in advancements and implementation of AI technologies to solve complex challenges.
Among the founding members of the OpenAI team is entrepreneur and engineer, Ilya Sutskever. He is the Chief Scientist at OpenAI and has contributed to the field of deep learning, machine translation and natural language processing. He also co-created Google Brain and taught at Stanford University, amongst other ventures.
