As China scrambles to join the global competition in artificial intelligence, the state-owned telecoms network operator and cloud service provider China Telecom has announced the launch of its own generative AI technology – “CTYun” – to rival the popular ChatGPT models of technology giants such as Baidu, Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent. CTYun, which is a self-developed pre-trained large language model, will be launching its product “in the near future” when it is ready. Staying true to its promise of cutting the cost of its cloud computing service, China Telecom’s general manager Hu Zhiqiang announced the launch of CTYun at an event in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian province.
Amidst the cutthroat competition with players like Alibaba Cloud, which this week announced a 50% discount on its products and services, China Telecom has managed to become one of the top cloud computing providers in China. According to market research firm IDC, China Telecom was the third-largest player in the cloud services market in the second half of 2022, overtaking Tencent Holdings. The telecoms firm has also emerged as a rival to NetEase, which recently launched its ChatGPT rival named CodeWave, as well as other Chinese tech giants such as Tencent and ByteDance, who have their own plans in the pipeline.
