ChatGPT: Turning Chat History Off – But What’s the Risk?

Date:

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the rollout of new controls to ChatGPT, its generative AI chatbot, in order to improve security and privacy for its users. The new updates allow users to turn on and off their chat history, while still retaining conversations for 30 days to monitor any potential abuse.

One major concern that sparked the need for these updated controls was the Mar. 20 ChatGPT incident, which allowed some users to see other user’s conversations. This caused quite a bit of concern, prompting Italy to even ban ChatGPT outright.

The new options that are available to users are found in the ChatGPT settings. Users will now be able to turn off the chat history, which will prevent their data from being used and leveraged to improve OpenAI’s AI models. However, turning off the chat history will cause the sidebar of previous chats to be unavailable, making it impossible to revisit previous conversations.

OpenAI also integrated a new export option which will allow users to export their ChatGPT data. From this, they can better understand what information ChatGPT is actually storing.

OpenAI is also developing a new ChatGPT Business subscription to allow professionals to manage their user data more securely and prevent confidential company data from being leaked.

OpenAI has made a name for itself in the industry with its advanced AI technology. The company is responsible for developments such as GPT-4, an advanced natural language processing algorithm, and the AI chatbot that can sum up PDFs, answer questions related to said document, and provide additional insights.
