Things are looking up for Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook. Even in the midst of restructuring and job losses, Meta managed to beat their revenue expectations, reporting year-over-year revenue increase for the first time in three quarters.
Meta’s focus, however, has changed from the original plan of solely engaging in the metaverse- a term for a sort of recursive and self-referential generation of hype. Now, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is adamant that Meta needs to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) in tandem with the metaverse.
Despite losing almost 4 billion dollars this quarter, making for a total of 13.7 billion for Meta’s Reality Labs, which combines the efforts of VR and AR projects, Mark insists that AI has a lot to contribute to the metaverse. Zuckerberg noted that there is an AI-centric operating system that can possibly form the basis of the next generation of computing.
At the same time, however, the Quest headsets have made Meta’s metaverse a reality. Half of the daily active users on Meta’s Quest headsets spend more than an hour a day on their device, but the company has not disclosed how many people are actually using their headsets.
Plus, Zuckerberg underlined his commitment to the Metaverse vision, noting that it is a long-term project.
