AI Startup Runway Introduces App to Deliver Video-Generated Artificial Intelligence to Customers

Date:

Yesterday, AI startup Runway launched its first mobile app to give users access to their video-to-video generative AI model, Gen-1. This app is available on iOS devices, and allows you to create an AI video with just the touch of your finger. With the app, users can record a video, upload an image, or type an idea into the text box in order to generate a video that is transformed using text prompts, images, or style presets.

Runway’s preset list includes options such as “Cloudscape,” to make your video look like it’s a claymation, charcoal sketch, watercolor art, paper origami, and more. Once your clip is created, it will take a few minutes to produce the final product, which often appears distorted or weird looking.

Runway is not the only company that has created text-to-video generators. Meta and Google have both launched their ‘Make-A-Video’ and ‘Imagen’ respectively, however each of them have their own limitations.

Runway’s app is free but with a limited number of credits per month. If you want to produce longer videos, you will need to purchase the premium versions. Currently, the available plans are the Standard Plan ($143.99/year) and the Pro Plan ($344.99/year). With the Standard Plan you will get 625 credits/month, along with other features such as 1080p video, unlimited projects and more. The Pro Plan gives users access to 2250 credits/month, and also allows them to enjoy all 30+ of Runway’s AI tools.

Runway also released Gen-2 in February, which allows users to generate videos from scratch. The beta version of this model is being launched slowly and users are beginning to gain access to it. In the future, Runway will be adding support for longer videos, as well as other new updates, such as higher-quality videos.

Runway was founded in 2018 by Cristóbal Valenzuela who, as CEO, continues to develop various AI-powered video-editing software. It is already being used by various movie/TV studios to reduce the time spent editing and creating videos. Examples include the visual effects team behind ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and the graphics team of CBS’ ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’.

Although AI generators can often look strange and awkward, they are constantly evolving and Runway’s mobile app is certainly no exception. Simple to use, with a range of features and a variety of tools, Runway’s new mobile app is unparalled when it comes to making AI videos.
