OpenAI’s Request to Trademark GPT Rejected

Date:

OpenAI, a technology company, is the recent talk of the town because of the popular ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by the firm. Everyone is buzzing with the idea of GPT – Generative Pre-trained Transformer – a program/tool trained to write like humans. OpenAI had filed a petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to trademark GPT. Unfortunately, the USPTO rejected the request due to their fee and lack of proof of action taken against infringement. OpenAI was asked to provide an additional statement and evidence of alleged infringement, which they did not provide. The USPTO further recommended OpenAI to file a new petition, though it could take at least five months for the request to be heard.

OpenAI, based in San Francisco, was co-founded by tech industry heavyweights such as Elon Musk, Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever. Their mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits everyone for the betterment of society. They have pledged not to build any technologies that have a potential harmful effect on humanity and strive on principle that AI should be open, safe and beneficial.

Yonathan Bouhadana is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of OpenAI. He is a software engineer and AI ethics researcher, who got his degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Yonathan is a strong proponent of ethical AI and believes that companies should be solely guided by impact on society, rather than on financials. He works to build a diverse and tech-savvy team of engineers at OpenAI and is driven by his core principle to make the world a better place.
