Microsoft has announced a major update to its Weather app on Windows 11 and Windows 10, but it comes with some bad news: adverts. The new version 4.53.5109 of the app has an overhauled home page with tabs to easily switch between multiple locations. Alongside this, the hourly forecast has been moved to the left-hand sidebar for convenience.
Unfortunately, the redesigned home page also includes Microsoft’s MSN News feed, which can contain some low-grade content, and adverts. The air quality indicator has been removed to make room for the ads and news stories.
This is part of an ongoing trend with Windows 11 as adverts have been appearing on the Start Menu and there have been rumors of them being implemented in the Bing AI chatbot.
The implementation of adverts in an app which already requires payment with Windows 11 and Windows 10 is incredibly frustrating and annoying for the user. Microsoft should focus on the weather forecast that is provided, and not ruin the user experience with advertisements.
