Kaspersky Finds Half of Single Men in UK Willing to Use ChatGPT to Trick Potential Dates

Date:

Research from Kaspersky reveals a surprising, yet concerning insight into the world of online dating. Over half (54%) of single men in the UK said they would be open to using the AI tool ChatGPT to deceive a potential partner on a dating app, in a bid to make themselves seem funnier or smarter. The research, which surveyed single men and women in the UK, uncovered the ways in which ChatGPT is impacting the dating world, for better or for worse.

ChatGPT is a generative AI tool that has recently taken the world by storm. Three quarters of all dating app users said they would be looking into using the tool to deliver a perfect chat up line. It can even help singles be more successful in their romantic pursuits, as people have become so overwhelmed by the countless choices on dating apps that they have resorted to using AI to increase their chances of landing a date, with 51% of all single women admitting to using the AI tool to chat with multiple potential partners at once.

Though the use of ChatGPT may help to amplify someone’s personality, the findings raised questions about the potential for AI-based catfishing, with 57% of respondents saying its use online was dishonest. Crystal Cansdale, dating expert at Inner Circle, commented on the issue; “There’s a real concern about the use of chatbots being deceiving. Authenticity is at the core of building relationships, and the AI-generated messages, however real they may seem, will only get you so far.”

One would think that with the help of ChatGPT, users would feel comfortable enhancing their online profiles, yet only 37% said they’d be open to using it for this purpose. David Emm, Principle Security Researcher at Kaspersky Global Research and Analysis Team, gave his advice on the subject; “If AI is making it easier to deceive, it’s essential to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of those you are speaking with, to avoid being a victim of deceitful tactics.”
