PM Modi Delivers Strong Message on Cross-Border Terrorism at SCO Summit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for a decisive response to cross-border terrorism during his remarks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan.
In his message delivered by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, PM Modi highlighted the threat posed by terrorism to regional and global peace, stressing that no form of terrorism can be justified. He called for the international community to isolate and expose countries that harbor terrorists, provide safe havens, and condone terrorism.
The Prime Minister urged the SCO community, representing a significant portion of the world’s population and economy, to prioritize combating terrorism and respecting territorial integrity in the region. He also emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of radicalization among youth and reiterated the shared commitment of member states to principles such as sovereignty, non-interference, and non-use of force.
PM Modi commended Iran and Belarus on joining the SCO and highlighted India’s commitment to reducing emissions, promoting connectivity for economic development, and embracing artificial intelligence for societal progress. He underscored the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity in infrastructure projects and trade relations within the SCO.
The Prime Minister’s remarks reflected India’s vision of SECURE, encompassing Security, Economic development, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty, and Environmental protection. The 21st-century focus on technology and innovation was also highlighted, with India leading efforts in formulating a National Strategy on Artificial Intelligence.
The SCO Summit serves as a platform for leaders to address the impact of ongoing conflicts, rising tensions, and global economic strains, with a shared goal of finding common ground amidst these challenges. PM Modi’s call for a decisive response to cross-border terrorism underscores the significance of collective action by the SCO community in safeguarding peace and stability in the region.
