One Piece Remake: Studio WIT Shuns AI Art in Favor of Tradition

Date:

In a recent announcement, it has been confirmed that the upcoming One Piece remake will not utilize AI-generated art for its backgrounds. The decision comes from art director Tomonori Kuroda, who is adamantly against the use of AI in this context, citing concerns about respecting the rights holders’ interests and dignity.

Kuroda, a seasoned art director known for his work on popular series such as A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun, as well as the 2021 hit Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House, expressed his strong views on the matter via Twitter on February 22. He urged fellow animators and artists to uphold their professional ethics, even in the face of potential advancements in AI technology.

On the other hand, WIT Studio, recognized for their use of AI art in the 2023 anime short The Dog and the Boy, explained that the decision was driven by a shortage of manpower. Despite Kuroda’s stance, some fans speculate that the One Piece remake may still incorporate AI art given the studio’s history.

The much-anticipated One Piece remake, produced by Studio WIT, known for renowned titles like Ranking of Kings, Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3, and Vinland Saga Season 1, has unveiled its staff and shared concept art. The remake is set to kick off with the East Blue Saga and aims to preserve the original manga’s darker themes with minimal censorship. Fans are eagerly awaiting this nostalgic journey back into the world of the Straw Hat Pirates.
