RansomHub Surpasses LockBit3 as Top Ransomware Group; FakeUpdates Plague Indian Organizations: Check Point Report

Global Cyber Threat Report: RansomHub Takes Lead, FakeUpdates Targets Indian Organizations

According to the latest Global Threat Index report by Check Point Software, RansomHub has emerged as the most prevalent ransomware group in June 2024, surpassing the long-standing leader LockBit3. This shift comes after law enforcement action against LockBit3 earlier this year, which led to a decline in its influence among affiliates.

RansomHub, believed to be a reincarnation of the Knight ransomware, was responsible for 21% of published ransomware attacks last month. On the other hand, FakeUpdates, also known as SocGholish, has become the most widespread malware globally, affecting 7% of organizations worldwide. Indian organizations, in particular, have experienced a significant surge in FakeUpdates attacks, facing an average of 2,924 attacks per week over the past six months, more than double the global average.

The Education/Research sector remained the most targeted industry globally, followed by Government/Military and Healthcare. In India, these sectors also topped the list of the most impacted industries.

Check Point researchers have identified a new Windows backdoor named BadSpace, distributed through the FakeUpdates campaign, utilizing sophisticated obfuscation and anti-sandbox techniques to evade detection.

Maya Horowitz, VP of Research at Check Point Software, emphasized the impact of actions against LockBit3 and highlighted the importance of organizations staying vigilant and updating their security measures to mitigate these evolving cyber threats.

Additional key findings from the report include:

– Androxgh0st and AgentTesla are among the top three most prevalent malware families globally.
– The most exploited vulnerability is an information disclosure flaw in Check Point VPN (CVE-2024-24919).
– Joker leads in the mobile malware category, followed by Anubis and AhMyth.
