Apple Watch to Get Chip, Display Upgrades in Spring Launch

Date:

Apple is reportedly in the process of developing a new Apple Watch model that will come equipped with upgraded display features and an enhanced processor. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg, these new Apple Watch versions are expected to hit the market in the upcoming spring season.

The tech giant is rumored to be working on four distinct variations of the Apple Watch, including an entry-level Apple Watch SE, two midrange editions, and a revamped version of the high-end Apple Watch Ultra model.

The mid-range and premium smartwatches are anticipated to be powered by a new iteration of Apple’s S8 wearable chip, which boasts a CPU with 5.6 billion transistors and a four-core NPU optimized for AI tasks. This increased processing power could potentially pave the way for AI enhancements in the future.

The two midrange editions, internally known as the N217 and N218, are projected to feature larger screens akin to the top-end Apple Watch Ultra. However, the Ultra model itself is unlikely to undergo a significant design overhaul.

Conversely, the entry-level SE edition might see a shift from an aluminum case to a plastic one to potentially lower manufacturing costs. Apple is also exploring the use of 3D printing technology for certain components.

While there were plans to include a new blood pressure sensor in the upcoming Apple Watch series, issues with reliability during testing may lead to a delay in its launch. Similarly, a sleep apnea sensor designed to measure blood oxygen saturation levels faces delays due to ongoing patent disputes.

It is worth noting that the new Apple Watch devices are not expected to support Apple Intelligence, an AI feature bundle set to be rolled out by the company next year.
