Netflix is set to bring the iconic Terminator franchise to the anime world with the upcoming release of Terminator Zero. The series, which is scheduled to premiere on August 29, will consist of eight episodes and promises to capture the original film’s horror vibe.
During the Los Angeles Anime Expo, showrunner Matt Tomlin revealed that Terminator Zero will channel the serial killer atmosphere of the classic 1984 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Despite the animation style, the Terminator character will be portrayed as a relentless machine, staying true to its roots. Influences for the show include acclaimed works like The Animatrix, Aeon Flux, and Samurai Champloo.
Production IG, known for their work on hits like Ghost in the Shell and Psycho Pass, will handle animation duties for the series. Tomlin, who will also write and executive produce the show, has crafted a storyline that blends elements of the future war with a narrative set in 1997, revolving around a soldier trying to alter humanity’s fate.
The official logline reads: 2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity…. This gripping premise sets the stage for a thrilling and intense viewing experience for fans of the Terminator franchise.
With its release on Netflix just around the corner, Terminator Zero is poised to make a splash in the world of anime, appealing to both longtime fans of the series and newcomers alike.
