It’s spring in the Bay Area and two Peninsula theaters are opening beloved shows that feature music and romance. Celebrate the season with Los Altos Stage Company’s production of “Harold and Maude,” based on the cult film written by Stanford grad Colin Higgins. Directed by LASC Executive Artistic Director Gary Landis, the play follows the quirky May-December romance of Harold and Maude, with Lillian Bogovich as Maude and Max Mahle as Harold. TheatreWorks Silicon Valley presents “A Distinct Society,” which takes place in a library straddling the U.S.-Canada border, and becomes a battleground during the Muslim travel ban. Written by Kareem Fahmy and directed by Giovanna Sardelli, tickets are available online and by phone for the April 5-30 run at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
The Redwood Symphony presents a concert version of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical, “Follies,” April 15-16 at Canada College. Directed by Debra Lambert and with music direction by Eric K., it’s a nostalgic look at lives and careers of former showgirls. Tickets are available online or by phone.
Pear Theatre’s annual “Pear Slices” compendium of short plays by members of the Pear Playwrights Group runs April 20 – May 14, with Caitlin Papp and Thomas Times directing this year’s nine short plays. Online and phone tickets are available. And closing out the month, Palo Alto Players presents “The Spongebob Musical” April 28-May 14 at Lucie Stern Theater. Artistic director Patrick Klein says the show is geared toward theatregoers ages 5 and up, with online and phone tickets available.
Los Altos Stage Company is a non-profit theater company in Los Altos, California with a mission to produce funny, sophisticated, and meaningful plays and musicals with a West Coast focus. Operating since 1975, LASC produces several main-stage shows every season as well as running educational programs, most recently focusing on theatre software and social media outreach.
Gary Landis is the Executive Artistic Director of Los Altos Stage Company. He has served in the role since 2020, and has directed a wide range of plays, musicals and operas for theater companies and opera houses around the Bay Area and around the country. He has a Masters in Music from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a staunch advocate for Bay Area theater.
