Google Maps has reportedly removed several images of iconic Austrian landmarks following a controversial move by environmental activists. According to reports, the altered photos were uploaded to Google Maps by members of the Austrian group Letzte Generation (The Last Generation) using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to depict the potential effects of climate change on the region.
The AI-generated images showcased a future scenario in 2070, portraying the Danube River and Austrian lakes dried up, and the Alpine peaks devoid of snow. Google took action by deleting the photos, citing a violation of their policies as the images did not accurately represent the locations they claimed to depict.
In response to Google’s removal of the images, Letzte Generation’s spokesperson, Marina Hagen Canavall, expressed little surprise, criticizing the tech giant for allegedly turning a blind eye to environmental concerns. The activist group had previously utilized Google Maps as a platform to raise awareness among tourists about the impacts of climate change on popular destinations in Austria.
Aside from their online activism, Letzte Generation has also engaged in physical protests, including blocking highways, to draw attention to environmental issues. The group has pledged to continue their advocacy efforts, with plans for further action both offline and online.
Meanwhile, unrelated to the recent incident, Google Maps is said to be phasing out the Followed Places feature by 2025, which allowed users to track their favorite local businesses for updates and notifications. This change signifies a shift in the app’s functionality and may impact how users engage with local businesses through the platform.
The clash between environmental activism and online platforms like Google Maps raises questions about the role of technology in addressing global issues such as climate change. While activists seek to utilize digital tools to spread awareness, companies like Google must navigate the fine line between enabling free expression and upholding content standards. The ongoing debate underscores the complex interplay between technology, activism, and corporate responsibility in the digital age.
