Air India Reduces Use of Single-use Plastic by 80 Percent for World Earth Day

Date:

On April 21st, Air India announced that it will reduce single-use plastic usage on flights by 80 percent globally. This is part of their commitment to be one of the most environmentally conscious organizations around the world. This initiative was made to coincide with the World Earth Day celebrated.

The company has implemented many initiatives for this such as the removal of 500ml plastic water bottles from Economy Class pockets on international flights. In addition, Air India removed plastic zip lock bags for cutlery, plastic straws and paper cups, as well as replaced them with alternatives. The purpose of this is to reduce the overall amount of plastic released into the environment. To further reduce the plastic output, Air India has set up a pours service from one-litre water bottles, tree-straws, reusable linen bags, and a compostable PET lid and plastic bag. All of these changes are set to promote greater sustainability within the company and reduce the amount of plastic polluting the environment.

The company Air India is owned by the Indian government and established in 2007. As the third largest airline in India, it is in a prime position to create a greener future. They offer domestic and international flights with more than 110 destinations from their hubs in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. In its continuous effort to reduce environmental impact, Air India has made various environmental initiatives such as using sustainable fuel and managing waste responsibly.

It is commendable that Air India has taken steps to reduce plastic consumption in an effort to become one of the most environmentally conscious companies around the world. The company’s use of sustainable fuel and management of waste responsibly are also laudable efforts towards protecting our planet. With the increasing importance of environmental awareness, Air India focuses on creating a greener future for its customers as we celebrate World Earth Day 2021.
