Microsoft Invests $3.2bn in Sweden for AI Expansion and Skills Training

Date:

Microsoft is set to make a significant investment of $3.2 billion in Sweden to accelerate AI development in the Nordics. This move marks the tech giant’s largest single investment in the region and aims to enhance Sweden’s competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence.

As part of this initiative, Microsoft plans to expand its AI and cloud infrastructure in the country. The company will deploy 20,000 advanced GPUs, essential for AI training, across its existing data centers located in Sandviken, Gävle, and Staffanstorp. Microsoft will utilize GPUs from Nvidia, with a possibility of incorporating chips from AMD and its own semiconductors.

Over the next three years, Microsoft will provide AI skills training to 250,000 individuals in Sweden. The training programs will target students, professionals in specific industries, and developers. This comprehensive approach aims to address the growing demand for AI skills in the country.

Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, expressed the company’s commitment to fostering AI adoption in the Nordics, including Sweden. With AI usage on the rise in the region, this investment seeks to bridge the gap and propel Sweden’s AI capabilities.

While Sweden currently lags behind its Nordic counterparts in AI adoption, this investment is poised to position the country as a key player in the global AI landscape. By focusing on enhancing AI skills and infrastructure, Microsoft’s investment in Sweden is expected to drive innovation and economic growth in the region.
