Google Joins Forces With DeepMind to Challenge OpenAI

Date:

Google has announced the consolidation of its formerly separate AI research units, Google Brain and DeepMind, into a single unit called Google DeepMind. The new organization is designed to bring together world-class AI expertise and Google’s vast computing resources and infrastructure in order to create new, groundbreaking AI products and advancements. The move is widely seen as an attempt by Google to compete with OpenAI, a well-known artificial intelligence company.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, noted that by combining all this talent into one unit, backed by Google’s computational power, progress in AI will be accelerated. Google Research remains an independent division, which will focus on advancing computer science in the areas of algorithms and theory, privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate and sustainability, and responsible AI.

DeepMind, which was founded by Demis Hassabis, has become an increasingly central part of Alphabet while competing with the likes of Microsoft and OpenAI to remain on the cutting edge of artificial intelligence. According to a report by The Information, Google Brain developers are working in conjunction with DeepMind specialists to create Gemini, a generative AI tool that could challenge OpenAI.

As DeepMind CEO Hassabis stated, the creation of Google DeepMind will bring together talented AI professionals who, backed by Google’s computing power, will strive to create new breakthroughs and products responsibly and ethically. He believes that together, they have the potential to reach their goal much faster.

Google DeepMind, a restructuring of the former Google Brain and DeepMind research labs, is a collaboration between world-class AI talent and the computing power of Google. This move is expected to give Google a much-needed competitive edge against rival Artificial Intelligence companies such as OpenAI. Google Research will now function separately, focusing on the development and advancement of computer science principles in areas such as AI ethics, privacy, security, and quantum computing. Led by Demis Hassabis, DeepMind promises to make responsible and ethical strides in Artificial Intelligence while leveraging the computing power of Google.
