Stability AI Introduces StableLM: An Open Source ChatGPT Alternative for Uniting AI

Date:

Stability AI has recently launched its collection of open-source language-model tools named StableLM, in order to contribute to the growth of the ever-expanding large language model (LLM) ecosystem. This new suite provides a viable alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has caused some concerns as OpenAI’s primary investor Microsoft seems to be gaining too much power in the industry. With their alpha version, StableLM comes with 3 billion and 7 billion parameters and 15 billion, 30 billion, and 65 billion parameter models are currently under construction that would be beneficial for many.

In comparison, OpenAI’s GPT-4 offers a massive amount of parameters, estimated to be one trillion – six times more than GPT-3. However, Stability AI stated that the parameter size may not always be the best indication of a language model’s capability. Their model is built upon an original dataset, The Pile, with a significant 1.5 trillion token content which helps exhibit an impressive efficiency even with smaller parameter sizes.

Growth is still required for StableLM, for which the team has promised to provide additional information in their GitHub page. Support will be available on the page, including model definitions and training details. Additionally, those interested can try a live interface of the 7 billion parameter StableLM model hosted by HuggingFace.

The emergence of this open-source tool alternative to ChatGPT, is a welcome news with many industry insiders. Third-party services such as BabyAGI and AutoGPT, have also developed and reported their progress on integrating recursion into AI applications, enabling it to create and modify its own prompts by learning new knowledge. Stable LM could be the ideal choice in terms of cost for those who would prefer not to pay the expensive access fees of OpenAI.
