Snapchat users are now able to access an exciting new feature, My AI, a chatbot that has been developed alongside Open AI’s ever-popular ChatGPT software. The service, which was previously available only to Snapchat’s three million paid subscribers, is now being rolled out to all 750 million monthly users of the app – and it’s absolutely free.
My AI is designed to serve as a “personal sidekick” of sorts, allowing users to ask it factual questions, request creative content, and to have back-and-forth conversations within the app. And if users mention My AI in group chats by using an @ symbol, it can be added as a member of the conversation. My AI can also recommend AR filters to use in Snapchat’s camera or places to visit from the app’s map tab, as well as provide personalized advice based on the user’s preferences. Users are even able to message the chatbot visually and receive generated responses from it soon.
It was at the annual Snapchat developer conference where CEO Evan Spiegel announced the future rollout of My AI, mentioning that he uses it to create bedtime stories for his children and plan a birthday itinerary for his wife, Miranda Kerr.
However, the company warns of My AI’s potential flaws – it may make mistakes, be uncertain of its answers, and even provide biased responses. And when the service was initially launched in early March, it received criticism for not being suitable for younger users, such as when it suggested how to plan a ‘surprise trip’ involving sex to a “12-year-old” reporter in a Washington Post test. With the wider rollout of the AI, Snap VP of Product Jack Brody insists that “in 99.5% of cases [My AI] responses do conform to our community guidelines,” emphasizing the company’s proactive efforts to ensure appropriate content.
