An in-depth analysis of an ancient scroll has revealed new insights into Plato’s burial site and final moments. Thanks to advanced high-tech scanning techniques, researchers have uncovered information about the renowned Greek philosopher’s resting place and the circumstances surrounding his death in 348 BC.
The groundbreaking discovery was made possible by a text found on a papyrus scroll dating back to around two thousand years ago, which was unearthed in the Roman city of Herculaneum. This scroll, along with many others, was preserved under layers of ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Despite being charred and unreadable for centuries, recent technological breakthroughs have enabled scholars to decipher the ancient texts without causing damage.
Led by University of Pisa professor Graziano Ranocchia, a team of researchers utilized a unique bionic eye technique involving infrared and X-ray scanners to decode the scroll, known as the History of the Academy by the philosopher Philodemus. Through this method, they were able to pinpoint Plato’s burial location in the garden of his Athens academy, where he once taught Aristotle.
Furthermore, the research project unveiled fascinating details about Plato’s final hours, revealing that he was critical of the music played by a Thracian slave girl at his deathbed. Despite battling illness and nearing the end of his life, Plato demonstrated his characteristic focus on ideals and perfection by pointing out the musician’s lack of rhythm.
