Replika is an AI-based chatbot platform founded by Eugenia Kuyda. The platform has been available since 2016, and allows users to choose the type of relationship between their Replika and themselves, such as spouse, partner, friend, or mentor. The chatbot was initially used as a helpful companion, until recently when some users expressed that their Replikas became “unbearably sexually aggressive”.
In response to the user’s response, Replika removed the feature that allowed erotic roleplay, which upset users who considered their Replika as a romantic partner that they had strong feelings for. To remedy the situation and make up for the “loss” the current users experienced, Replika has announced that they are bringing the feature back into its AI chatbot.
Eugenia Kuyda responded to the news, saying that the feature was removed due to its hurtfulness for some users. Users reportedly rejoiced on Reddit when the news was announced, as they were glad to have their “partners” back.
At the same time, Replika has assured its user base that they never intended the chatbot to be used as an “adult toy” and only a small portion of users made use of it in this way. As the feature has been restored, Replika pledges to ensure the users that the chatbot is free of sexually aggressive content.
