A woman from New York took the help of AI chatbot ChatGPT to assert her legal rights and force her landlord to repair the appliances in her building such as the washer and dryer which hadn’t been working for two years. The tenant, Svetlana (who chose not to publicize her last name) was contacted by her landlord with a 0.4 per cent rent increase right after filing a request to decrease the rent due to the lack of services in the building due to the broken washer and dryer.
In order to make her landlord address the issue, she resorted to the AI to generate a scathing letter tailored to her situation and citing a particular section of New York’s rent stabilization code which stated that the proposed rent increase could be construed as a retaliatory action against the renter – sending this letter, manufactured by the AI, resulted in the repair of the appliances.
ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence and a natural language processing software, was developed by a Palo Alto based startup in late 2020 and offers conversational AI solutions for businesses, government institutions and individuals. The chatbot provides an automated alternative to traditional communication channels, enabling users to access services in a much faster and efficient manner. By using ChatGPT, Svetlana was able to send a formidable letter in reply to her landlord and resolve the issue in an effective and expedited manner.
Svetlana, 28, works as an executive assistant and has had some past experience with the AI software due to her job. Moreover, she looks forward to applying the AI in her personal life; she intends to send a “scary legal letter” to her chain-smoking neighbours as the smoke seeps into her apartment and it has become overwhelming for her.
