Instant messaging app Snapchat made some major announcements in its annual Snap Partner Summit this week, such as introducing all users to its artificial intelligence chatbot, My AI. Equipped with ChatGPT technology from startup OpenAI, My AI is now able to respond to users’ messages with fully AI-generated images in addition to recommending filters to use in Snapchat’s camera or locations to visit.
Snapchat Inc. is taking safety precautions to ensure no inappropriate or harmful information is provided by My AI by temporarily restricting a user’s access if they repeatedly ask it inappropriate or harmful questions. The chatbot’s responses have also been found to adhere to Snapchat’s community guidelines in 99.5% of conversations. These development in artificial intelligence have been praised by many as they potentially create exciting creative possibilities and make the app feel more personalized than ever before.
Elon Musk is one of the individuals at the helm of AI advancement, a topic he recently spoke about in terms of bias in AI, how the industry’s expansion could impact the economy, and FTC’s Lina Khan’s upcoming Capitol Hill testimony. Jessica Melugin of the Competitive Enterprise Institute was quick to break down his comments, highlighting how the tech industry as a whole is becoming increasingly more reliant on AI.
As AI can generate original texts and images, its growing use raises some valid concerns about whether there is a risk of plagiarizing published works and providing inaccurate information to users. Keeping this in mind, it is safe to say that Snapchat’s development in the AI sector is quite consequential, both for their users, the tech industry, and beyond.
