UK Minister for Indo-Pacific, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, recently concluded a series of crucial meetings in mainland China and Hong Kong SAR. During her visit, she engaged in discussions with high-ranking officials, focusing on a range of global and regional issues.
In Beijing, Minister Trevelyan met with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deng Li. They discussed the UK’s strategic approach towards China, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and engagement on various fronts. The Minister urged China to play a positive role in addressing global challenges such as the situation in the Middle East and the conflict in Ukraine.
Furthermore, the two officials explored opportunities for collaboration in areas like artificial intelligence, trade, development, and climate change. Minister Trevelyan also raised concerns about human rights issues, including the situation in Hong Kong and the implementation of the National Security Law.
In Hong Kong, the Minister met with Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christopher Hui. She reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to the people of Hong Kong and expressed concerns regarding the erosion of rights and freedoms in the region. Discussions also centered on pragmatic cooperation in areas like financial stability and green finance.
Throughout her visit, Minister Trevelyan emphasized the importance of maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with China, allowing for discussions on mutual interests as well as areas of disagreement.
