Purdue University announced the introduction of a new digital ID for undergraduate students of the Western Lafayette Campus. The students can access the digital ID in the Transact eAccounts app, and use their iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android smartphone to securely access campus buildings, book stores, meal services, and other campus areas. This student ID can also be used for meals and laundry services around campus.
Apple Wallet has been introducing student IDs since 2018, and this technology is currently available in dozens of colleges and universities from the U.S. and Canada. However, incoming students from this summer will no longer receive physical IDs. The digital IDs have an Express Mode, which allows students to simply hold their iPhones or Apple Watches near a card reader to gain access. If they turn off this mode, they will have to authenticate through Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
