Microsoft is making a bold statement by dropping Twitter from its advertising platform nearly two months after Twitter announced its new pricing model, charging a minimum of $42,000 per month to users of its API. Microsoft sent emails to its customers in early March with the new pricing details, which Wired reported at the time to be an unsustainable option for most enterprises and research institutions. As one of the biggest companies in the world with $2.15 trillion in market cap and $100 billion cash on hand at the end of 2020, Microsoft has the resources to pay what Twitter wants.
However, as of April 25, 2023, Microsoft Smart Campaigns with Multi-platform and Digital Marketing Center (DMC) will no longer support Twitter, meaning users will no longer be able to access their account, schedule content, or otherwise manage tweets through Microsoft’s free social media service. However, companies that use Microsoft Advertising will still be able to manage and create content for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has criticized and threatened legal action as he believes Microsoft used Twitter’s API-provided data to train and illegally license OpenAI’s powerful AI models. Just yesterday at a Miami event, he said he was hearing legitimate advertiser concerns, but that he wouldn’t make changes he didn’t believe in.
