Flipboard, the renowned magazine app, is growing its presence in the Fediverse, an open-source social media platform that is home to multiple services including Mastodon. To foster further engagement and discoverability, the tech company is launching four editorial desks that will curate news and updates with the help of professional content selectors. The News Desk will be concerned with the current news events, while Tech, Culture, and Science desks will bring up-to-date knowledge on tech, arts and entertainment, and science respectively.
The Flipboard server in Mastodon, consisting of over 600 members, has been a ‘highly moderated, fast, secure, and reliable’ entrance for first-time Mastodon users. The app also integrated its platform with Mastodon. This all happened after Twitter disbarring Flipboard from their API access. The alteration in their pricing plans made it hard for small developers to flourish. This ‘high cost, unreliable, and untrustworthy’ approach of Twitter prompted Flipboard CEO Mike McCue never to rely on Twitter again.
After the activity of curating content for the Mastodon through their own server, Flipboard is now launching the independent desks that will bring interesting and elevating angles to different topics. The desks will be solely operated by experts in the field and will deem to not bombard the feeds with surplus posts.
Flipboard CEO, Mike McCue, also been a partaker in the virtual FediForum held to discuss the growth and development of the Fediverse. The editorial desks will be a great help in discovering the right accounts to follow because curating content has become a challenging task in the Fediverse.
Therefore, Flipboard began its journey pointing its direction towards Mastodon and gradually sinking its claws into the platform to provide a user friendly ecosystem for the users, along with exceptional discoverability for the content.
