Elon Musk Advises on AI: Creating a Contingency Plan for Safety

Date:

Renowned entrepreneur and tech guru Elon Musk has warned about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, advising governments to create a contingency plan to shut down AI – if and when it gets out of hand. In a recent interview with Fox News, Musk implied that governments should be able to take control over service centres powering AI technology if tech companies are unable to do so. He also said it would not be necessary to deploy extreme measures such as blowing up the facilities to get them offline, but simply turning off the power should be sufficient.

Musk’s opinion is shared by many tech leaders, such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, who have publicly requested government regulation over AI technology. In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI as a measure to counter the potential risks of uncontrolled AI development, however he eventually stepped off from the board as he felt it was not living up to its mission.

Essentially, Musk believes that governments should be ready to step in if tech companies lose control over AI, and that the maximum truth-seeking AI (his own project called TruthGPT) should be developed with caution. To this end, Musk has worked with other AI experts to discuss potential regulations of the technology and he urged them to take a pause in AI development and be aware of potential consequences.

OpenAI is a research organization focusing on Artificial Intelligence, co-founded by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and renowned AI scientist, Sam Altman. Founded in 2015 and based in San Francisco, OpenAI’s mission is to advance digital intelligence in a beneficial way, so as to build and deploy a wide range of AI services, systems and technologies for the benefit of humanity. OpenAI’s team of over 200 researchers, engineers, and developers experience in AI, deep learning, reinforcement learning, robotics, and natural language processing, aim to build systems with human-level intelligence capabilities.
