Generative Pretrained Transform (GPT) has been one of the most talked about technologies in the world of AI. It is used in ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that has taken the internet by storm. Consequently, everyone who follows GPT look out for the release of the next version of GPT.
GPT-3 has made its mark, GPT-3.5 is a sensations and GPT-4 amazed us. Now, the question weighing on everyone’s mind is, is there going to be a GPT-5? And if yes, then when will it launch?
Will There Be a GPT-5?
Definitely yes, the next iteration of OpenAI’s GPT large language model will be known as GPT-5. This is one of the reasons that OpenAI is tight-lipped with information related to the upcoming GPT model. It waits to disclose it until the launch date is almost close.
Many sources have predicted that GPT-5 is already in training and could launch sometime in early 2024. However, CEO Sam Altman of OpenAI squashed these rumors during an MIT event. He clarified that OpenAI is not currently training GPT-5 and will not do so for some time. This showed that there is indeed a GPT-5 in the works, but OpenAI is not hurrying up in its development.
When Is GPT-5 Coming?
Altman’s comments about GPT-5’s development may make it seem a 2024 launch is off the cards. But, its important to pay attention to the details. It’s possible that OpenAI is already collecting data or deciding on the architecture of GPT-5. That way, even if the actual training hasn’t started, work on the model could be underway.
OpenAI needs to maintain its competitive edge over its competition. So, slowing down the rate of its AI model is not going to help. Keeping this in mind, a late 2024 launch is still possible keeping in line with the time it took to train and fine-tune the previous models.
What Changes Could GPT-5 Bring?
It’s too soon to say anything with certainty. But, GPT-5 is sure to be an improved version of GPT-4. It’s speculated that GPT-5 could be a mix of language model, vision model and sound-recognition model.
OpenAI’s GPT-4 has potentials that are yet to be explored. Consumers have barely used the “vision” capabilities of GPT-4 making it the main focus in the meantime.
Let’s Talk About OpenAI and Sam Altman
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research lab jointly with offices in San Francisco and Palo Alto, focusing on work in machine learning. OpenAI’s missions are to ensure that AI’s benefits are as widely and evenly spread as possible. They also explores safety and privacy aspects associated with the advancements of artificial intelligence.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a programmer and entrepreneur. As of 2021, he served as the president of Altimeter Capital, co-chairman of OpenAI, founding president of startup incubator Y Combinator and longtime board member of Reddit. Altman is among the few visionaries that have noticed the fast-growing pace of artificial intelligence and robotics technologies. He is a firm believer that AIs should be governed by clear policies or laws.
