Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that nearly all of Russia’s nuclear forces have been modernized, marking the occasion of Russia’s annual Defender of the Fatherland Day. In a recorded speech, Putin highlighted the ongoing efforts to upgrade the country’s strategic land, sea, and air nuclear capabilities, with 95% of modern weapons and equipment now in use within the strategic nuclear forces.
During his address, Putin praised the soldiers involved in what he referred to as a special military operation in Ukraine, commending their efforts as they fight for truth and justice. He also paid tribute to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at the Kremlin wall.
Putin emphasized the importance of constantly strengthening the Armed Forces through re-equipping and modernization efforts, with a focus on incorporating real combat experience into the development process. He highlighted the progress made in the Navy, where the naval component of the nuclear triad is nearly 100% modernized.
The Russian leader also announced the serial production of the new Zircon hypersonic missiles and ongoing testing of new strike systems. Additionally, new strategic submarines have been added to the navy, and four Tu-160M nuclear-capable bomber planes were recently delivered to the armed forces.
Looking ahead, Putin outlined plans for developing and serial production of promising new models, along with the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in the military sphere. Despite delays in testing and deployment of some new systems, Putin reiterated Russia’s position that its latest generation of advanced weapons is unmatched by any rival.
As tensions remain high with the West, Putin has frequently reminded the international community of Russia’s nuclear capabilities. The Tu-160M nuclear-capable bomber, which he flew in on Defender of the Fatherland Day, is capable of carrying cruise missiles and short-range nuclear missiles over long distances without refueling. Putin described the aircraft as new and reliable following a demonstration flight that showcased its capabilities.
