As the world prepares for the advent of 6G and 7G networks, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is taking proactive steps to equip telecom operators with the knowledge and tools to navigate the risks and opportunities that come with these emerging technologies.
During a two-day conference held in Lagos on February 20, 2024, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, highlighted the evolving landscape of the telecommunications industry and the importance of effective risk management in the face of rapid technological advancements.
Represented by Ubale Maska, the Commission’s Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Dr. Maida emphasized the need for collaboration and innovation to ensure a seamless integration of 6G and 7G technologies into the existing telecom infrastructure.
The conference, themed Evolution and Future Risk Management in the Telecoms Industry: Harnessing Emerging Technologies and Trends, brought together industry experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by the next generations of wireless technologies.
With the rise of cybersecurity threats and ethical considerations, Dr. Maida underscored the necessity of addressing new risks associated with technological innovations while also embracing the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and blockchain.
Kelechi Nwankwo, the NCC’s Head of Corporate Strategy and Risk Management, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that all stakeholders must collaborate to safeguard the growth and sustainability of the telecom industry in the face of upcoming advancements.
As the NCC remains committed to fostering an environment that encourages innovation and prioritizes security, it is clear that navigating the uncharted territory of 6G and 7G networks will require a collective effort from regulators, industry players, and other stakeholders to implement robust risk management strategies and share best practices for a successful transition.
