City lawmakers in Brazil have recently passed what seems to be the country’s first-ever legislation entirely written by artificial intelligence, without their knowledge at the time. The experimental ordinance was approved in October in Porto Alegre, with councilman Ramiro Rosario admitting that it was created by a chatbot.
Rosario revealed that he tasked the ChatGPT chatbot to draft a proposal aimed at preventing the city from charging taxpayers for replacing stolen water consumption meters. Surprisingly, he presented the proposal to his 35 council peers without making any alterations or disclosing its AI origin.
He admitted, If I had revealed it beforehand, the proposal likely wouldn’t have even reached the voting stage. This innovative approach to drafting legislation raises questions about the potential future role of artificial intelligence in decision-making processes.
