The monologues were created using audio and video clips from family members of the victims.
The impact of hearing the voices of those who have lost their lives to gun violence cannot be understated. It serves as a powerful reminder that these victims were real people with hopes, dreams, and futures that were cut short because Congress failed to act. The goal of The Shotline is to capture the attention of lawmakers who have thus far turned a blind eye to this grave issue.
The statistics speak for themselves. The death rate from gun violence in the United States is seven times higher than that of Canada and a shocking 340 times higher than in the United Kingdom. To make matters worse, the United States is the only peer nation where gun violence is the leading cause of death for children.
The impact of gun violence on our youth is devastating. Children spend their school days learning how to hide during active shooter drills, and the younger generation has been dubbed the lockdown generation due to their constant fear of mass shootings in public places. This trauma is being passed down from one generation to the next, and Congress has done nothing to alleviate the suffering.
While bipartisan legislation was passed in 2022, it was relatively weak and fell short of addressing the root causes of gun violence. The legislation mainly focused on incentivizing states to pass their own laws and expanding existing legislation on domestic abusers owning firearms. It was a step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done.
March For Our Lives is calling on Congress to pass universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and implement legislation that sets national requirements for safe firearm storage. They are also supporting the Protecting Kids from Gun Marketing Act, which would regulate gun marketing to minors similarly to alcohol and tobacco.
The voices of the victims are demanding action. One mother, whose son was killed by an unsecured gun, emphasized that thoughts and prayers are not enough – they must be followed by action. The heartbreaking monologues from The Shotline should serve as a wakeup call to Congress that they can no longer ignore the pleas of those directly affected by gun violence.
