Indian Military Leaders Look to Ancient Scriptures for Indigenous Tactics and Strategies

Date:

Military leaders of the Indian armed forces are being urged to draw inspiration from ancient scriptures to develop indigenous tactics, operational art, and combat strategies, according to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan. Despite the prevalence of technology-driven warfare and the ongoing third revolution in military affairs (RMA), General Chauhan argues that concepts found in ancient texts can still be relevant and valuable today.

General Chauhan expressed his advocacy for using ancient scriptures as a source of inspiration during the launch of the book ‘Artificial Intelligence and National Security’ at the Defence Literature Festival. He highlighted the importance of ancient wisdom from texts such as the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Bhagavad Gita in meeting the strategic needs of modern warfare.

Pointing out that India had once excelled in various fields such as astrology, physics, medicine, astronomy, science, and mathematics, General Chauhan emphasized the need to regain ancient stratagems and incorporate them into the development of grand strategies and diplomacy. He also stressed the timeless relevance of dharma, which encompasses principles of duty, righteousness, and moral balance, as depicted in Indian scriptures.

General Chauhan underlined the significance of civilization’s strategic thoughts being shaped by geographical and historical factors, and how the strength of Indian civilization derives from its 5,000-year heritage. He noted that ancient Indian texts serve as repositories of knowledge and encapsulate the wisdom that can guide strategic thinking.

To catch up with advanced nations, General Chauhan argued that the Indian armed forces must strive to enter the third RMA, which is characterized by a change in mindset driven by innovative tactics. He emphasized the importance of imagination and an innovative approach in achieving this goal.
