Cosmonic Launches WebAssembly PaaS in Open Beta

Date:

Cosmonic, the company behind the open-source wasmCloud project, has sparked excitement in the tech world by announcing that their WebAssembly (Wasm) Platform-as-a-Service offering is now in open beta. This new iteration comes with a number of features granting users the ability to easily integrate Wasm into existing applications. One of those is Cosmonic Connect Kubernetes, which helps to integrate existing Kubernetes clusters with WebAssembly applications running in the service.

The company was co-founded by Liam Randall, who was previously the founder of Critical Stack, a Kubernetes companies that was acquired by Capital One. He also worked on projects like Cloud Custodian, which was later donated to the CNCF and joined Stacklet, a company set up to commercialize Cloud Custodian. Randall expressed his immense excitement for WebAssembly and Cosmonic, stating, “I truly believe that we’re going to talk about the next epoch of computing today.”

Despite the major companies that are already taking advantage of Wasm in their production, such as Adobe and Cloudflare, the community is still working to build an ecosystem that suits large enterprises. While Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) is an important use case for Wasm, Cosmonic aims to go beyond that. With their PaaS system, users won’t be limited to certain platform architectures – they also get to build monoliths, microservices and event-driven architectures.

According to Taylor Thomas, Engineering Director at Cosmonic, “A lot of people are really pivoting towards FaaS. It’s all functions. … But that’s one little tiny slice of a much bigger picture. And that’s where Cosmonic and wasmCloud really shine.” WebAssembly is believed to become the “final abstraction of technology” due to its potential to turn application libraries into building blocks and its ability to run the same code remotely across different languages.

Cosmonic’s PaaS is enabled by the wasmCloud application runtime, which was donated to the CNCF by in 2021. The project received contributions from Capital One, Volvo, BMW and Intel, among many others. In addition, WADM (WebAssembly Declarative Application Manager) is another open-source initiative from Cosmonic that allows users to update their infrastructure with the latest features, similar to upgrading an old car with the latest technology.
